General Methods of Philisophical Reasoning

Induction: the premises of an arguement should support the conclusion in such a way, that if the premises are true, it is probable that the conclusion is true.

  1. Socrates was greek
  2. Greeks ate fish
  3. Socrates probably ate fish

Deductive reasoning: If the premise of an arguement is true, and the logic sound, it is impossible for the arguement to not be true.

  1. All men are mortal
  2. Socrates was a man
  3. Socrates was mortal

Platonism/neoplatonism: The world we percieve is only a shadow, truth is the perfection of that shadow, and can only be observed through pure thought

positivism: Truth can only be found through sensual perception/observation

pragmatism: If it works, it must be true

rationalism: Truth can only be found by pure reason and logic

solipsism: The only truth is that in our mind

structuralism: Truth can only be found thru observing the ways through which things interact with each other
